A watching brief is often asked for on smaller developments or areas where there is a possibility that archaeological features or finds may be disturbed or destroyed during groundworks. Trial trenching involves the investigation of a percentage of a development site to establish the extent, character and date of archaeological remains likely to be affected by the development. The results will determine the nature of further archaeological work on the site. An excavation programme requires archaeological features, artefacts, ecofacts, structures and deposits to be recorded and analysed in order to answer specific research questions associated with the site, geographical area or types of archaeological evidence known or likely to be present on the site.
